William George Meaney (1894-1980)

December 1963 American Labor Union Leader George Meaney became the first recipient
of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Eight years earlier in 1955 George Meaney successfully merged the
American Federation of Labor and
Congress of Industrial Organization
into the AFL-CIO.

served as AFL-CIO President from 1955-1979

Late in life, a reporter told George Meaney
“Mr. Meaney, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology could make an automobile
with NO human hands touching it.”

Mr. Meaney’s reply,
“That’s great get back to me
